Irish president voices solidarity with war-affected people
"We hold in our thoughts the millions of people worldwide who are enduring the devastating impacts of interconnected crises of climate change, war, conflict, and displacement, the many families this Christmas who will sadly experience fear, uncertainty, or profound loss," Connolly said.
She added, "In particular, we think of the people of Palestine, Ukraine and Sudan," delivering her message in both Irish and English. Drawing on Ireland’s own history of forced emigration and hardship, Connolly said, "Our own history, marked by forced emigration and loss, gives us a lived understanding of the brutal realities of dispossession, hunger and war."
She also acknowledged those struggling during the holiday season, including people who are ill, lonely, or separated from loved ones. Connolly extended special thanks to Irish Defense Forces personnel stationed abroad, noting their role in safeguarding peace and protecting vulnerable communities far from Ireland.
Her remarks come as violence persists in Gaza, where over 71,000 Palestinians have been killed in two years despite the October ceasefire, while Sudan’s civil war between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continues to cause widespread humanitarian suffering. The conflict in Ukraine, ongoing since February 2022, also remains a focus of global concern.
